Oceanography (40.0710)

When is this class offered?

THIS COURSE REQUIRES A PRE-SET STUDENT COUNT TO START UP IN AUGUST!

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The class will be unique in that it integrates the sciences (chemistry, earth science and physics), presenting them as a single area of study in Oceanography.   Students will recognize that the ocean is a dynamic system reflecting interactions among organisms, ecosystems, chemical cycles, and physical and geological processes, on land, in air, and in the oceans. Students will not only study the ocean but the water systems that drain into oceans, coastlines and marine life including plants, algae, vertebrates and invertebrates. Students will investigate oceanography concepts through experiences such as hands-on activities in class, Internet offerings and fieldwork (overnight trip to coast, aquarium, etc.) using the processes of inquiry.

MATERIALS

Textbook:  At the current moment, the textbook will be a dynamic resource built up throughout the school year using current articles and documentation collected by the instructor and students.  This will require a large 3-ring binder with dividers.  There may be an additional workbook-like text that students will be asked to purchase but the resource is under review at the moment.  There will be a printing fee for this course per student to cover the copy expenses for the articles and other pertinent information.

Flashdrive:  Recommend 16GB USB 3.0 but others will do.  If use a USB 2.0, need a bigger flash  drive with more GB to handle the downloads I send home occasionally.

Laptop:  At times, students will be asked to bring a laptop to class for a lab or mapping activity.  Students can share laptops depending on who has one or not but assignments using web-based interfaces will be assigned from time to time as homework.
